URGENT UPDATE: Significant traffic impacts are underway in Boulder County as major construction projects and road closures take effect this week. Motorists are advised to plan alternate routes as these developments could severely disrupt travel.
Crews are currently working on 28th Street improvements between Pearl and Iris. This project aims to enhance multimodal travel, but it has temporarily relocated the northbound 28th and Valmont Road RTD Stop No. 17992. This stop, serving routes 205 and BOLT, is moved just south of the Valmont intersection and is expected to remain in place until December 31.
Another major construction effort is taking place on 19th Street, where crews are replacing the bridge over Fourmile Canyon Creek and constructing a bike/pedestrian underpass. Northbound 19th Street will be completely closed from Sumac to Upland, with detours in place via Quince. This project is anticipated to last until April 1, 2024.
In addition, the 63rd Street waterline replacement project has closed 63rd, Andrus, and 62nd from Jay to Valmont. While business and residential access will be maintained, through traffic is prohibited. This project is also scheduled for completion by April 1, 2024.
Milling and paving operations on Colo. 7 are ongoing, with alternating double-lane closures in both directions between 28th Street and Cherryvale Road. These operations are expected to continue through late October, with the project wrapping up by December 15, 2023. Work hours are from 7 a.m. to midnight, Monday to Friday.
On Sugarloaf Road, two culvert replacements at Betasso Road will require lane closures. A temporary three-way traffic signal will be installed, creating potential travel delays, with work expected to last into November. Access to Betasso Preserve will be maintained.
Furthermore, the City of Boulder is conducting a waterline replacement project on 63rd Street, which will impact traffic through February 2024. The road will be closed between Jay and Valmont, but it will remain open for local and business access only. Both lanes of traffic on 63rd Street between Gunbarrel Avenue to the railroad crossing will shift to the east side of the road. A full closure of 63rd Street between Jay Road and Twin Lakes Road will occur starting Monday and is expected to last through mid-November.
In Erie, the Prince Lake Dam rehabilitation is in progress at 111th Street and Flatiron Meadows Boulevard. This project is expected to continue through March 2026 and includes significant rebuilding efforts. While no lane closures are anticipated, drivers should be prepared for brief delays as work trucks enter and exit the site.
The Erie Parkway and Glacier Drive traffic signal installation is also underway, resulting in lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays through December.
Lastly, the Weld County will fully close WCR 1.5 and WCR 3 through November 26 for maintenance. These closures will be in effect 24 hours a day, impacting travel in the area.
Motorists are encouraged to stay informed about these developments and to seek alternative routes as they navigate these significant disruptions in Boulder County. For the latest updates, residents can check local traffic advisories or contact the Boulder County Road Maintenance Division.
