Bemidji State’s Monster Mash Beaver Bash Draws Huge Crowds

UPDATE: The inaugural Monster Mash Beaver Bash at Bemidji State University proved to be a thrilling success, attracting a massive crowd of trick-or-treaters on October 31, 2023. The event took place at the John Glas Fieldhouse, transforming the venue into a Halloween wonderland filled with candy, games, and festive spirit.

Organized as a replacement for traditional trick-or-treating at residence halls, the Monster Mash aimed to provide a safer, centralized location for families. Jonathan Dietz, director of housing and residential life, reported a surge in attendance, with families lining up 15 to 30 minutes early to join the fun. “The energy level has been really high,” Dietz noted, highlighting the overwhelming turnout and excitement surrounding the event.

Over 300 kids were welcomed within the first 30 minutes alone, as students and resident assistants like Shelby Thyssen and Emma Ostrowski handed out treats. “It’s amazing to see so many kids enjoying themselves,” Thyssen said. The event not only provided a safe haven from the rainy weather but also fostered a sense of community spirit among students and families.

The Monster Mash featured a variety of activities, including pumpkin tic-tac-toe, giant Jenga, and Connect Four, ensuring there was something for everyone. Participants were also treated to candy and prizes, making the night a memorable experience. Bucky the Beaver, the university’s mascot, made a special appearance, delighting children with photos and cheers.

Dietz emphasized that the event’s success hinged on the extraordinary involvement of students living in the dorms. “About 90% of people helping tonight are non-staff, showcasing incredible student engagement,” he explained. Various student organizations, including the Communications Honor Society and the Wildlife Society, contributed to the festive atmosphere.

The enthusiastic response from the community reflects a growing tradition at Bemidji State, with Dietz expressing gratitude for the support received from students and staff alike. “It’s so fun to see our student community come out and really engage with everyone and connect with folks,” he concluded.

As the night continues, the Monster Mash Beaver Bash sets a hopeful precedent for future events, promoting unity and joy within the Bemidji community. Expect more exciting developments in the coming months as BSU Housing and Residential Life plans to build on this successful foundation.
