Upper Darby Lt. Lania Stevens Receives Keystone Award from Governor

UPDATE: In a momentous ceremony held at the refurbished Governor’s Mansion, Governor Josh Shapiro honored Upper Darby Police Lieutenant Lania Stevens with the prestigious Governor’s Keystone Award on Monday. This recognition comes just months after an arson attack at the mansion in April 2023, symbolizing resilience and community spirit.

The Governor’s Keystone Award celebrates everyday Pennsylvanians who have made significant contributions to their communities. Lt. Stevens was one of only eight individuals and two groups to receive this honor. Shapiro emphasized the impact these honorees have on the commonwealth, stating, “You are the people inspiring fellow Pennsylvanians.”

Former Philadelphia 76ers broadcaster Marc Zumoff served as the emcee, highlighting Stevens’ pivotal role in bridging the gap between the police force and the community. “It is tough work building bridges between a community and its police force, but this woman does that while at the same time making history,” Zumoff remarked.

Lt. Stevens is not only the first Black female lieutenant in the history of the Upper Darby Police Department, but she also serves as the vice president of the Domestic Abuse Project of Delaware County. Her dedication extends to mentoring local youth through the department’s TAPS Program Academy, which fosters positive relationships between law enforcement and high school students.

Governor Shapiro expressed the significance of the event’s location, describing the Governor’s Mansion as “the people’s house” and a representation of William Penn’s vision for an open and inclusive community. “You are the builders who do this every day,” he stated, commending the honorees’ commitment to fostering a more just society.

Upper Darby Mayor Ed Brown shared his pride in Stevens’ achievements, noting she is one of only 17 recipients statewide. “Lt. Stevens runs our Teens and Police Service Academy, aimed at improving relations between law enforcement and youth,” he said. “We are proud to have her represent Upper Darby Township.”

Police Superintendent Timothy Bernhardt echoed these sentiments, stating, “I couldn’t be prouder of the men and women who serve this community every day.” He highlighted that Stevens’ recognition is a testament to her dedication and professionalism.

As Lt. Stevens continues to inspire those around her, this award not only marks a personal achievement but also reinforces the importance of community engagement in law enforcement. The Upper Darby Police Department is committed to the ongoing development of strong ties with the community, and Stevens is at the forefront of that mission.

With her groundbreaking achievements and unwavering dedication, Lt. Lania Stevens stands as a beacon of hope and progress in Upper Darby and beyond. The community watches closely as she continues to break barriers and inspire future generations.
