URGENT UPDATE: The Humane Society of the North Bay (HSNB) has just launched a brand-new outdoor “catio” space, designed to transform the lives of shelter cats and increase adoptions. Located in Vallejo, CA, this innovative space is now welcoming adoptable cats to enjoy fresh air and sunshine in a safe environment.
The new Ila Emerson Memorial Catio features wrap-around enclosed netting and multi-level platforms, allowing cats to perch and nap at various heights. Thanks to generous donations, the catio is equipped with cat trees, sensory toys, and cozy bedding, creating an inviting atmosphere for feline friends.
“This space allows cats to roam and socialize in a healthy, safe environment—it benefits everybody,” said Kristina George, a staff member at HSNB. The catio is expected to significantly enhance the social skills of the kitties, leading to quicker adoptions.
The project took approximately seven weeks to complete, with contributions from local businesses like Foster Lumber and Golden State Lumber, and was constructed by Marin-based catio expert Roger Sierra and his son, Brooke. HSNB Director Carol Stillson noted that prior to the catio, the shelter’s capacity was limited to two indoor rooms for around 60 cats, often leading to stress and confinement. Now, kitties have access to cozy nooks and shaded perches, giving them—what the shelter calls—“a taste of nature.”
Starting November 1, HSNB will also kick off its annual adoption special, offering discounted rates on black and tuxedo cats. These felines often face stigma during this season, as Joseph Hayden, HSNB Board President, explained, “black cats are associated with a history of cults and sacrifices.” To protect them, adoptions will pause until late October, but from November, adopters can receive $50 off kitten fees and $25 off for cats aged six months and older. Additionally, adopting a pair of cats will earn a $50 discount, making it a great time for potential adopters.
The Humane Society prides itself on its low return rates and thorough screening of potential pet owners. “We do our homework,” Hayden emphasized, adding that the organization is strict to ensure the best interests of the animals.
