UPDATE: In an exciting finish at the Ivy League Qualifier Tournament, sophomore Edward Liao of Yale has advanced to the semifinals after a strong showing against top competitors. The tournament, held at Penn’s Hecht Tennis Center, featured fierce matchups against teams from the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton, Dartmouth, Brown, and Harvard.
Liao’s journey was marked by resilience and skill, as he battled through a tough bracket. On the first day, the Bulldogs faced challenges, with teammates Jim Ji, Krish Gupta, and Troy Kudrjavtsev narrowly losing their singles matches. In doubles, both pairings fell short against strong opponents from Princeton and Penn. However, Liao shined with a decisive 6-3, 6-3 victory over Brown, advancing him to the round of 16.
Reflecting on his performance, Liao stated, “I thought I performed well. After having a rough weekend at Regionals, I was glad I was able to bounce back.” His determination paid off as he continued to impress on the second day, leading his doubles team to an 8-4 victory over Dartmouth. Despite close losses for Gupta and Ji against the Brown Bears, their competitive spirit was evident as they pushed their matches to three sets.
Liao’s momentum carried into the semifinals where he faced off against Michael Zheng, the No.1 ranked player in collegiate tennis from Columbia. Liao put up a strong defense but ultimately fell with scores of 6-2, 6-3. He remarked, “My biggest takeaway from my performance is that I have the level and the skill to hang with the best players in the Ivy League.”
The Bulldogs’ performance at the tournament showcases their potential as they prepare for their next challenge at the Georgia Tech Invitational this Friday. With Liao leading the charge, the team looks to build on this experience and come back stronger.
