BREAKING: Ada-Borup-West has just secured a resounding victory over Red Lake Falls, sweeping them with a dominant performance in the Minnesota Section 8A semifinals. The Cougars triumphed with set scores of 25-17, 25-10, and 25-12 at Lysaker Gymnasium, showcasing their strength and determination.
Star player Malayna Syverson, a towering 6-foot-4 middle blocker committed to North Dakota State, delivered an impressive 22 kills, including 10 in the opening set. Her early contributions helped the Cougars establish a lead that Red Lake Falls could not overcome.
The Cougars, now at 22-8 this season, are set to face East Grand Forks Sacred Heart in the section championship on Friday at 7 p.m. in Crookston. This matchup is particularly significant as Ada-Borup-West handed Sacred Heart their only loss of the season early on.
“We just have to put a lot of effort in,”
Syverson said in a postmatch interview with Your Live Event. “We’ve built as a team since the Sacred Heart matchup, and so have they. We’ll lock in and practice and get to the game.”
Red Lake Falls finishes its season with a strong record of 24-7, having previously upset the defending section champions, Kittson County Central, in the quarterfinals. Despite their defeat, the team fought hard, tying the first set at nine points before the Cougars pulled away. Syverson noted the team initially felt nerves but quickly regained their composure to build momentum.
Adding to Ada-Borup-West’s success, Morgan Engel, also committed to NDSU, contributed significantly with 14 kills. The Cougars established an early lead in the second set and never looked back, demonstrating their dominance throughout the match.
