A man from Northridge, California, received a three-year prison sentence for attempting to transport over 2.4 pounds of methamphetamine concealed within his luggage. Raj Matharu, 32, was apprehended at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) while preparing to board a flight to Sydney, Australia. He pleaded guilty to federal charges of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine in June 2023.
On November 6, 2024, Matharu attempted to travel to Sydney with two suitcases filled with clothing, including a cow pajama onesie, that were coated in the illegal substance. According to federal prosecutors, he was flagged during the check-in process when he attempted to redistribute the weight of his bags after being informed they were overweight. Surveillance footage captured this exchange as he opened both suitcases to rearrange their contents.
After checking his luggage, Matharu’s bags were subjected to X-ray screening, which revealed unusual densities. This prompted a secondary inspection by airport security personnel. Officers noticed stiff clothing and, upon further investigation, a K9 unit was deployed to assist in the search. Matharu was intercepted just after crossing the jet bridge, preparing to board his flight.
During questioning, he confirmed ownership of the two bags and acknowledged that he had packed them himself. When officers opened the suitcases, they discovered clothing that was stiff and caked in a white powdery substance. Subsequent tests confirmed that the substance was methamphetamine, as detailed in court documents from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Further analysis revealed that six of the 17 clothing items in the suitcases contained methamphetamine. In his plea agreement, Matharu admitted he was aware he was transporting a federally controlled substance that he intended to distribute in Australia.
Matharu’s sentencing reflects ongoing efforts by law enforcement to intercept drug trafficking operations at major airports. As international travel resumes, authorities remain vigilant against attempts to smuggle illegal substances across borders.
