Advocacy Specialist Jeremy Daffern to Present ‘Listening Differently’ Event

URGENT UPDATE: Advocacy specialist Jeremy Daffern is set to deliver a compelling presentation titled “Listening Differently” on October 28, 2023, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Kanter Student Center’s Frey Conference Suite in Wayne, Nebraska. This FREE event opens its doors at 5:30 p.m. and is designed for anyone eager to engage with the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

Daffern, an expert from the Nebraska Commission for Deaf and Hard of Hearing, emphasizes the importance of understanding the unique challenges faced by those with hearing impairments. “Being deaf or hard of hearing is an experience I can never completely understand,” Daffern commented. “Perhaps learning from people who have successfully navigated an increasingly complex world that is designed for people who do hear can help us ‘walk a while’ not in their shoes, but side by side, so that we can be better friends with all our neighbors.”

This event promises to foster a deeper understanding of resilience and hope in the deaf community. Daffern, an alumnus of Gallaudet University, will share his personal journey alongside ASL interpreter Meghann Cassidy. Together, they aim to create an inclusive dialogue, tackling the complexities of navigating a world not built for those who cannot hear.

Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in conversations, ask questions, and gain valuable resources to better understand the deaf and hard-of-hearing experience. The program will conclude with a unique session titled “listening differently,” featuring members from the Wayne State Department of Music.

This initiative is sponsored by Wayne State’s public and global health honors students, the service-learning program, and the Nebraska Commission for Deaf and Hard of Hearing, making it a crucial event for community engagement and awareness.
