UPDATE: In a stunning display, the Utah Mammoth triumphed over the Minnesota Wild with a decisive score of 6-2 on Saturday night, marking their sixth consecutive victory. In just the first 3:29 of the game, Logan Cooley dazzled fans by scoring twice, pushing the Mammoth to an early lead.
Cooley wasted no time, netting his first goal just 56 seconds into the game, executing a remarkable backhand shot out of midair past Wild goalie Filip Gustavsson. He followed up with another goal on a power play at the 3:29 mark, taking advantage of a slashing penalty on Minnesota’s Yakov Trenin.
The Mammoth quickly extended their lead to 3-0 when Nick Schmaltz scored his sixth goal of the season a mere five minutes into the match. However, the Wild fought back, with veteran Marcus Johansson scoring two crucial goals to bring Minnesota within reach.
“We were able to capitalize on our opportunities early, and that set the tone for the game,” said Mammoth coach.
Johansson scored his first goal with just over four minutes left in the first period, utilizing a one-timer assist from Zeev Buium. He then added another late in the second period, cutting the Mammoth’s lead to 3-2 with a power play goal.
Despite the Wild’s efforts, the Mammoth maintained control. JJ Peterka scored to push the lead to 4-2 with 6:23 remaining in the third period, followed by Schmaltz’s second goal, bringing the score to 5-2. Schmaltz has now scored seven goals in his last five games, showcasing his offensive prowess.
Utah’s goalie, Karel Vejmelka, was instrumental in the victory, racking up 32 saves throughout the match. An empty-netter by John Marino with just 5.1 seconds left sealed the Mammoth’s victory.
