URGENT UPDATE: A Texas mother and her boyfriend have been arrested for allegedly abandoning her 12-year-old son at home while they moved out of their apartment. The incident occurred in Copperas Cove on the evening of October 17, 2023, raising serious concerns about child safety.
According to a probable cause affidavit, police were dispatched after receiving reports of an abandoned child. Upon arrival at the couple’s apartment near Primrose Drive, officers found the boy alone, who revealed he returned from school to find all of their furniture and belongings gone. He claimed that his mother, Erica Renee Sanders, and her boyfriend, Keven Dwayne Adams, had moved out without informing him.
Witnesses indicated a troubling pattern, with neighbors stating that the couple had a history of kicking the boy out of the home. When officers contacted Sanders and Adams by phone, Adams insisted that the boy had not been abandoned. He claimed that Sanders had moved in with him and that her son was not welcome at his residence.
However, when pressed for details, Sanders failed to provide a time frame for when her brother was supposed to pick up the boy, nor could she furnish any contact information for him. This raised red flags for the police, prompting them to involve Child Protective Services (CPS).
Hours passed without any attempt from Sanders’ family to retrieve the child. After police reached Sanders’ brother, he denied any knowledge of being asked to pick up his nephew. In a shocking twist, Adams later stated he would not allow the boy inside his home if the police had an arrest warrant for Sanders.
Ultimately, both Sanders and Adams were arrested, and the boy was placed in the custody of his uncle. This case highlights the urgent need for child welfare and safety, with officials emphasizing the dangers of parental abandonment.
As investigations continue, authorities are urging anyone with information about similar situations to come forward. This troubling case serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by children in unstable home environments.
