Eagle County Schools Report 7% Drop in Chronic Absenteeism

UPDATE: Eagle County School District has announced a significant 7% reduction in chronic absenteeism this year compared to the same period last year. This exciting development was revealed as students return from Fall Break, marking a collective triumph for families, educators, and the community.

As of now, 30% of students had previously met the definition of chronic absenteeism, missing 10% or more of the school year. This statistic served as a wake-up call prompting a district-wide initiative aimed at improving attendance. The efforts are part of a broader campaign coinciding with Absenteeism Awareness Month, supported by the Colorado Department of Education.

“Students learn best when they’re in class,” said Philip Qualman, superintendent of Eagle County School District. “Regular attendance builds strong learning habits and supports friendships, making students feel connected to their school community.”

The district’s comprehensive strategy includes clear communication about attendance policies, allowing families to better understand the impact of absences. Schools have reported a growing awareness among families regarding attendance expectations, leading to more consistent student attendance.

However, the journey is far from over. With the holiday season approaching, when absences tend to rise, the district urges everyone to remain vigilant. “Every day in class really does make a difference,” Qualman emphasized.

The community’s joint efforts are beginning to yield positive results, illustrating the profound impact that collaboration can have on educational outcomes. The district remains committed to tracking attendance closely and enhancing support for teachers and families.

As the students of Eagle County continue to show up and engage, the district is optimistic about maintaining this momentum. The goal is clear: to ensure every student has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive in a supportive educational environment.
