Clifford “Smock” Mark Williams, a beloved figure in the Creston community, passed away recently, leaving behind a legacy of service and hospitality. Born on September 1, 1961, to Larry Clifford and Martha Ann (Miller) Williams in Lenox, he made significant contributions both as a military serviceman and a local business owner.
Mark graduated from Creston High School in 1979 and immediately enlisted in the United States Navy. He served with the Helicopter Combat Support Squadron 11, based in San Diego, California, and spent five years stationed in the Philippines. His military service instilled in him a strong sense of duty, which he carried into his civilian life after returning to Creston in 1987.
Upon his return, Mark opened Charley’s, a local restaurant famous for its Charley burgers and enchiladas. He became known for his hard work and dedication, often seen engaging with patrons and providing a welcoming environment. His commitment to serving others defined his career and endeared him to customers and colleagues alike.
In a continuation of his passion for hospitality, Mark briefly retired from Charley’s but soon opened That Bar, where he once again brought the community together. Recently, he decided to close That Bar and embrace retirement, focusing on spending quality time with his grandchildren and trading stocks with his father.
Mark is survived by his son, Mark (Sarah) Williams, three granddaughters—Lydia, Mallory, and Harper—and grandsons, Archibold and Dexter. He also leaves behind his son Kenneth (Corey) Thorp and his children, Brayden and Kailani. His father, Larry Williams, brother Clarence Williams (Kathy Novy), sister Lori Williams, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and friends, will miss him greatly.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on October 25, 2023, at Pearson Family Funeral Service & Cremation Center. Pastor John Rutz of Trinity Lutheran Church will officiate the ceremony. Friends and family are invited to a visitation on October 24, from 16:00 to 18:00, to pay their respects.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be directed to the Creston VFW Post #1797. Military honors will be provided by the Creston VFW Post and the United States Navy. Mark’s ashes will be interred at Graceland Cemetery at a later date.
Mark Williams will be remembered not only for his culinary talents and entrepreneurial spirit but also for the warmth and compassion he extended to everyone he met. His impact on the community will live on through the lives he touched.
