Hyundai Motor has officially launched its locally-assembled Staria multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) in Malaysia, marking a significant step in its production strategy within the region. The assembly commenced earlier this month at a facility in Kulim, located in the state of Kedah. This plant is operated by Inokom Corporation, which is primarily owned by local vehicle assembler and distributor Sime Darby Motors. Hyundai holds a 15% stake in Inokom.
In a strategic move earlier this year, Hyundai established a new subsidiary, Hyundai Motor Malaysia (HMY), to manage its investments and oversee operations at the Kulim plant in collaboration with Sime Darby. Eric Lee, president of HMY, emphasized the importance of this venture, stating, “The commencement of local production of the Hyundai Staria is more than just a production achievement. It represents Hyundai’s confidence in Malaysia as an important market and a growing hub for future assembly.”
The Staria MPV is designed to cater to the evolving needs of Malaysian consumers, blending functionality with modern design. The local assembly aims to enhance the supply chain and support the automotive industry in Malaysia, reinforcing the country’s position as a regional manufacturing hub.
Sui Keng Huat, managing director of Inokom, highlighted the growth of the company within Hyundai’s global network. He noted, “From humble beginnings, we have grown into a trusted assembly partner. Every vehicle produced here is crafted with precision, care and in full compliance with Hyundai’s global standards, driven entirely by 100% Malaysian talent.”
Sime Darby Motors further confirmed its commitment to strengthening supply chains and supporting the industrial ecosystem in Malaysia. This local assembly initiative is expected to not only provide economic benefits but also create job opportunities in the automotive sector.
The launch of the Staria is part of Hyundai’s broader strategy to invest in Malaysia’s automotive landscape, aiming to enhance its market presence and cater to local demand. As the automotive industry in Malaysia continues to evolve, Hyundai’s initiative reflects a strategic alignment with the government’s vision for the sector.
In conclusion, the introduction of the Staria MPV signifies a pivotal moment for Hyundai in Malaysia, showcasing the company’s dedication to local production and the potential of the Malaysian market. As the assembly operations ramp up, the focus will remain on delivering quality vehicles that meet both local and international standards.
