Doug Martin, a former All-Pro running back for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, died in police custody in the early hours of March 9, 2024, following an incident in Oakland, California. According to a statement from the Oakland Police Department (OPD), officers responded to a report of a break-in shortly after 04:15 a.m. and encountered Martin at the scene.
The OPD’s press release confirmed that Martin was involved in a break-in incident prior to his death. “While responding officers were attempting to detain him, a brief struggle occurred,” the statement indicated. After being taken into custody, Martin became unresponsive. Paramedics arrived, provided medical assistance, and transported him to a local hospital, where he later died. He was 36 years old.
The circumstances surrounding Martin’s death are currently under investigation. The OPD stated that, in line with department policy, the Homicide Section, the Internal Affairs Bureau, the Oakland City Police Commission, the Community Police Review Agency, and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office are all involved in the inquiry.
Martin’s family released a statement expressing their sorrow: “It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning. Cause of death is currently unconfirmed. Please respect our privacy at this time.”

Doug Martin was a celebrated figure in American football, particularly for his time with the Buccaneers, where he spent six of his seven NFL seasons. He was recognized as a “fan favorite” and made a significant impact on the franchise. In 2023, as part of the team’s 50-year anniversary celebration, he was selected as one of the top 50 players in franchise history.
At just 5-foot-9, Martin was known for his powerful running style, earning him the nickname “Muscle Hamster.” Over his career, he accumulated 5,356 rushing yards and scored 30 touchdowns. He was drafted in the first round (No. 31 overall) by the Buccaneers in 2012 after an impressive collegiate career at Boise State University, where he ranks among the top ten in career rushing yards and touchdowns.
Martin had an explosive rookie season, rushing for 1,454 yards and scoring 11 touchdowns, along with 49 receptions for 472 yards and another touchdown. His performance earned him a selection to the Pro Bowl, and he finished his rookie year with the third-most yards from scrimmage in NFL history for a newcomer, trailing only legends Eric Dickerson and Edgerrin James.
His standout season came in 2015 when he rushed for 1,402 yards and six touchdowns, alongside 33 receptions for 271 yards and another score. After his time with the Buccaneers, Martin concluded his NFL career with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2018.
