Glen Powell has officially landed the lead role in Edgar Wright’s film adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, “The Running Man,” but not without first obtaining the author’s approval. During a recent appearance at New York Comic Con, Powell shared the unique circumstances surrounding his casting as Ben Richards in the much-anticipated film.
Powell recalled that Wright initially offered him the role with the stipulation that King would need to give his blessing. “Edgar offered me this movie, and I was like, ‘Yes.’ I’m like, ‘Let’s go…’ And then, like, later that night [Edgar says], ‘By the way, you have to be approved by Stephen King. He’s gonna watch ‘Hit Man’ tonight,’” Powell explained. This meant that he had to wait anxiously overnight, hoping that King enjoyed his performance in the 2023 romantic crime comedy, “Hit Man,” directed by Richard Linklater.
Fortunately for Powell, King responded positively, stating that he “loved” the film, thereby granting permission for Powell to take on the role in “The Running Man.” In this adaptation, Powell’s character, Ben Richards, is a desperate working-class man who competes in a deadly television show. Contestants, known as Runners, must survive for 30 days while being hunted by professional assassins, with their every move broadcast to an eager audience. The stakes are high, as each passing day brings greater rewards.
Faithful Adaptation with Modern Elements
Wright emphasized that his version of “The Running Man” stays true to King’s original 1982 novel while integrating contemporary themes. “The coolest part about this [film] that I’m just really excited about is Edgar decided to take this [story] — loyal to the book — out in the real world,” Powell noted.
In this updated narrative, citizens play an active role, with the ability to record and report on the Runners, introducing a sense of tension that permeates the film. Powell described the atmosphere as “relentless,” highlighting a new layer of urgency that reflects modern societal dynamics.
The original film adaptation of “The Running Man” was released in 1987, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. However, Wright’s upcoming film is expected to resonate more closely with the themes and nuances of King’s work, appealing to both long-time fans and new viewers alike.
