Hilo Skatepark Project Gains Momentum as Contracts Finalized

UPDATE: The long-awaited Hilo skatepark project is officially moving forward as the county has signed contracts for crucial design and permitting phases. This significant development comes as community leaders and the Hilo Skateplaza Coalition prepare to launch fundraising efforts once the site’s environmental assessment is completed.

The skatepark, to be located just across from the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium, aims to serve as a vibrant hub for local skaters and enthusiasts. Rhonda Nichols, president of the Hilo Skateplaza Coalition, emphasized the importance of careful planning, stating, “Our group will not raise funds until the EA and plans are completed.” The coalition has invested over 16 years into this initiative, ensuring they do not repeat past mistakes where funds were lost due to sudden project changes.

The fundraising goal is set at $2 million, with Nichols affirming that many donors are eager to contribute both cash and in-kind donations. “We want to give people a reason to celebrate their contributions and see timely results from their donations,” she said.

In a recent statement, Clayton Honma, Director of Parks and Recreation, confirmed that the environmental assessment is “currently underway” and is expected to conclude by the end of this year. On September 20, the county finalized a contract with an architect to design an indoor facility intended for skating derbies and events. This marks the first step of what could be a transformative project for Hilo.

County spokesman Tom Callis explained that this architectural contract is part of a series of three agreements essential for the park’s development. The subsequent agreements will address planning, design, and permitting for outdoor skating elements, roadways, and other vital facilities.

Honma shared that funding has already been secured for “most of” the first phase of construction, which will include the indoor skating facility, while the outdoor elements will be funded through collaboration with the Skateplaza Coalition. “We are looking forward to exploring options for the second construction phase,” he added.

Nichols reassured the community that the outdoor skating space will be constructed by experienced local contractors funded through private resources. The county will manage infrastructure projects, including restrooms, via a competitive bidding process.

“We are grateful for the continued partnership with county leadership and Parks and Recreation Department staff. I believe, in the end, this project will have been worth the wait and process,” Nichols concluded.

As the community rallies for support and anticipation builds, the Hilo skatepark project represents more than just a recreational space; it symbolizes years of dedication and collaboration aimed at enriching local youth culture.
