Mary Ruth Ingleby, a dedicated educator and passionate advocate for children and animals, passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 75 on October 18, 2025. Her death followed a long and challenging battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Born on June 22, 1950, in Salt Lake City, she was the third of six children born to Don and Lavon Ingleby.
A Life Shaped by Early Experiences
Mary’s early life was marked by significant challenges. At the age of sixteen, she made the difficult decision to give up her first child for adoption. This experience profoundly influenced her future, igniting a lifelong passion for teaching and nurturing young minds. After obtaining an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education from Cabrillo College, she dedicated many years to teaching children aged three to five years old.
Among her students was her second child, Damian, who developed a lasting love for reading and learning, a testament to Mary’s impactful teaching. Her commitment to education extended beyond the classroom, as she consistently inspired her students to embrace knowledge and creativity.
A Community Advocate
Mary’s love for the ocean made Santa Cruz her home for over 53 years. In addition to her teaching career, she was known for her compassion towards animals and her tireless advocacy for marginalized communities. She devoted considerable time and resources to various causes, demonstrating her commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of others.
Music was also a vital part of Mary’s life. She participated in numerous choirs and singing duos, filling her home with melodies. It was rare for a day to go by without music being present in her life, reflecting her vibrant personality.
Later in life, Mary found joy in reconnecting with her first child, Bill. Their relationship flourished as they spent significant time together until his untimely passing in his mid-30s. She is survived by her second son, Damian, and her younger sister, Colette.
