Beloved Milford Resident Mable Smidt Dies at Age 86

The Milford community is mourning the loss of Mable Smidt, who passed away on April 26, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, and unwavering honesty. Known for always speaking her mind, Mable touched countless lives through her warmth and approachable nature.

Born October 28, 1939, in Bliss, Nebraska, as Mable Marie Harkins, she was the daughter of Harvey and Grace Harkins and grew up alongside five siblings. Throughout her life, Mable embraced travel, family, and meaningful connections with those around her. She was a hardworking woman whose commitment to others was evident in both her personal and professional lives.

A Life of Dedication and Heart

Mable graduated from Bartlett High School and in 1959 married her first husband, Bernard Lee Fulkerth. She was a devoted mother to five children, balancing family life with steady work in various states including Nebraska, Michigan, and Iowa. Many locals remember her warmly from her 30-year tenure at Bil-Mar turkey factory, Jo & By’s Pub, and the Taco House, where she became a familiar, beloved face.

Later, Mable remarried Darryl “Cowboy” Smidt, with whom she shared many adventures. She continued to carry his memory with deep affection after his passing.

Legacy and Family Left Behind

Mable is survived by her five children: Bernie (Deb) Fulkerth of Hartley; Daniel (Natascha) Fulkerth of Kenosha, Wisconsin; Randy (Connie) Fulkerth of Alta; Dean Fulkerth and Tammy Naab, both of Milford. Her family also includes two stepchildren, Brenda (Gene) Nattress and Mike Smidt, as well as nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands Bernard Lee Fulkerth and Darryl Smidt, and brothers-in-law Jerry Day and Ron Brock.

Upcoming Celebration of Life

A joint celebration of life honoring Mable and Darryl Smidt will take place at Turner Jenness Funeral Home in Milford on May 9, 2026. Visitation is scheduled from 1-3 p.m., followed by services at 3 p.m.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Abben Cancer Center in Spencer or Lakes Regional Hospice in Spirit Lake, organizations that provided exemplary care during Mable’s final months.
