North Platte Council Delays Vote on 247-Unit Housing Project Amid Crunch

North Platte City Council Tables Vote on Major Housing Development Amid Worker Shortage

The North Platte City Council has delayed a critical vote on Newberry Village, a proposed 247-unit manufactured home community set for the city’s east side near Bicentennial and Philip Avenue. The council’s decision Tuesday night stalls an initiative many say is vital to easing the local housing crunch and helping employers retain workers.

The project, backed by Chief Industries and supported by local employers like Sustainable Beef, seeks more than $1.2 million in tax increment financing (TIF) to help fund the development. Supporters argue that expanding affordable housing options is crucial to addressing a growing workforce shortage, particularly for large employers whose employees endure long commutes.

Local Employers Say New Housing Is Critical to Workforce Stability

David Briggs, CEO of Sustainable Beef, emphasized the human and economic impact. “About 40% of our 1,000 employees commute into North Platte every day,” Briggs said. “The governor helped by providing buses temporarily, but that program ends this year. When it does, many of those workers — currently spending around two hours daily commuting — will seriously consider relocating here.”

“We think the price point is good for our employees. I applaud Chief Industries for stepping up to help with this,” Briggs added.

The delay in the vote stalls progress on a plan that supporters say could significantly reduce commute times and improve quality of life for hundreds of workers, while simultaneously easing persistent housing shortages in North Platte.

What’s Next for Newberry Village?

The council did not announce a new date for reconsideration of the Newberry Village proposal, but it is expected to return to the agenda at the next meeting in two weeks. The outcome will have direct ramifications for workforce housing availability and local economic development in this key Nebraska city, with lessons and parallels for other communities nationwide facing housing and labor challenges.

As this story develops, it sheds light on a growing nationwide struggle to balance affordable housing with expanding local economies, underscoring how critical timely municipal decisions are to solving broader workforce and housing issues.
