CARICOM Election Observation Mission confirms a peaceful, well-managed general election in Antigua and Barbuda on April 30, 2026, according to a preliminary statement released this week. The observation mission arrived in the country between April 23 and April 27 and stayed through May 3 to oversee not only Election Day but also preparatory engagements. They recorded a smooth opening at 6:00 a.m. with adequate police presence ensuring security. The observers highlighted that polling agents from both major political parties were present, ensuring transparency. Voters queued peacefully, with voter turnout peaking in the morning and again near closing time at 6:00 p.m. Staff provided courteous assistance, especially to elderly and disabled voters, and actively guided those unfamiliar with the process.
Orderly Closing Procedures and Transparent Ballot Counting
The mission stayed through the close of polls, noting that any voters still in line were allowed to cast ballots following election regulations. Observers witnessed the secure sealing of ballot boxes and their transfer to counting stations, where ballot counting was conducted in the presence of polling agents, media personnel, and election monitors.
Throughout the day, police maintained a professional and unobtrusive presence, supporting a peaceful environment. The CARICOM team specifically commended the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission for its efficient and transparent administration, as well as the political parties and their supporters for participating responsibly.
“We commend the professionalism of polling staff and the peaceful atmosphere sustained across polling stations,” the observation mission stated.
