Gas Prices Spike 9 Cents Overnight to National High Since 2022
Gas prices surged 9 cents overnight to a new national average of $4.39 per gallon, marking the largest one-day increase in the past six weeks. This sharp rise pushes prices to levels not seen since July 2022, a critical point linked to global tensions at the start of the Ukraine war.
In Vermont, where prices climbed from $4.24 to $4.33 per gallon on Friday, commuters and businesses are already feeling the pinch. The spiral in fuel costs traces back to growing turmoil in the war in Iran and stalled peace negotiations, shaking energy markets worldwide.
Everyday Drivers and Small Businesses Hit Hard
Heidi Gnaedinger, owner of Genus Garden Design in South Burlington, shared how the price hike is directly impacting her business and daily life. Though she fills up her tank only about once a week, the cost has soared well past expectations.
“I thought it was going to be $100 but it’s $125 to fill up my tank. That’s ridiculous,” Gnaedinger said, “It’s costing me a lot of money.”
She is already considering passing some of this burden to clients by adding a gas surcharge or increasing her hourly rates by $5.
AAA Warns Travel Habits Could Shift If Prices Climb Further
Dan Goodman, an AAA representative with decades of experience forecasting fuel and travel trends, emphasized that while prices haven’t hit the critical $5 per gallon threshold, continued increases might eventually curb travel plans nationwide.
“It’s more when gas prices hit that—unfortunately—that $5 mark, that’s when we see travel behavior change,” Goodman said.
However, for many Kentucky and U.S. drivers, the current prices are already forcing adjustments. Charlie Fitzpatrick, a resident of South Burlington, noted how rising fuel and airfare costs are leading to canceled travel plans.
“That definitely would affect any plans that we would have. And also airfare, no travel plans on the airfare because that’s going up a little bit, too,” Fitzpatrick said.
What This Means for Kentucky and National Drivers
While the current average price in Kentucky has not yet reached the national peak, the market volatility linked to global conflicts signals potential further increases. Every rise in gas prices ripples through the economy, affecting commuting, shipping costs, groceries, and goods across Kentucky and the entire United States.
As the Iran war tensions escalate and peace talks remain stalled, fuel prices could continue their upward trajectory, placing greater strain on households and small businesses alike. Consumers are urged to prepare for possible price volatility in the coming days and weeks.
Kentucky drivers and businesses should watch closely as these energy market shifts unfold, impacting budgets and travel decisions nationwide.
What To Watch Next
Analysts and AAA will monitor fuel prices closely to gauge any significant behavior changes from consumers once prices approach the $5 per gallon mark. Meanwhile, ongoing geopolitical developments in the Middle East are expected to remain the key driver of price swings.
