Hartselle Honors Lt. Gen. Robert York with Hall of Fame Induction

UPDATE: Hartselle pays tribute to its hero! Lt. Gen. Robert York, a distinguished military leader, was posthumously inducted into the Morgan County Leadership Hall of Fame during a heartfelt ceremony on March 5, 2023. This honor, awarded by the Morgan County Schools Foundation, underscores York’s exceptional contributions to the nation and the local community.

With no surviving family members present, Hartselle Councilwoman Sherry Yeager accepted the award on York’s behalf. The award will be prominently displayed in the new library once completed, as Mayor Missy Evans emphasized the community’s commitment to honoring its local heroes.

Born on April 23, 1913, York’s journey began in Hartselle, where he moved at just five years old. A decorated veteran of World War II, York achieved the rank of colonel at only 32, making him one of the youngest in the U.S. Army. He commanded troops during pivotal campaigns in Africa, Sicily, and Normandy, showcasing his bravery and leadership.

The ceremony featured a poignant tribute video, where Carson Clark of the Hall of Fame Committee highlighted York’s unwavering commitment to his soldiers:

“He never asked his soldiers to do anything he would not do himself.”

York’s remarkable career also included teaching at the United States Military Academy at West Point and serving in key roles within the United Nations Command in Korea.

Among his myriad honors, York received the Distinguished Service Cross, the Distinguished Service Medal, and two Silver Stars for valor, among others. Clark noted that the Hall of Fame aims to inspire students by recognizing both past and contemporary leaders, stating, “We want to show people in the past who had an impact on Morgan County.”

York’s life story is a testament to resilience and patriotism, leaving a legacy that will inspire future generations in Hartselle. The foundation also recognized scholarship recipients, including Claire Dunaway from Priceville High School and Callie Rae Childers and Blakely Kay Faulkner from A.P. Brewer High School, emphasizing its mission to support students and educators in the community.

As the community reflects on York’s legacy, this induction serves as a powerful reminder of the significant accomplishments that can arise from small towns. The Morgan County Schools Foundation invites students to apply for scholarships annually, reinforcing its commitment to educational empowerment.
