Jensen Beach High Wrestling Team Claims Fifth at State Championships

UPDATE: The Jensen Beach High School boys wrestling team has made a significant mark at the Class 2A IBT state championships, securing a strong fifth-place finish on March 7, 2023, at the Silver Spurs Arena. This remarkable achievement comes even after the team lost its star wrestler, Sebastian Degennaro, a four-time state champion now competing at the University of Oklahoma.

With a total of 77.5 points, the Falcons finished just 21.5 points behind fourth-place Charlotte and maintained a solid 11.5-point lead over sixth-place North Fort Myers. The team’s performance underscores their resilience and determination, as they adapt to the absence of a state champion for the first time since 2020.

Freshman sensation Kane Drake was the standout performer, making his state debut and clinching runner-up honors in the 120-pound weight class. “I really had no clue I’d get this far,” Drake expressed after a tough finals match against Riverdale’s Eric Bush, where he suffered a pin in the third round. Drake showcased his strength throughout the tournament, dominating earlier matches with decisive victories, including a 21-8 majority decision and an 18-1 technical fall.

Drake’s journey to the finals included a favorite match against Gulf Breeze senior Garrett Ferguson, where he secured a 6-1 decision to advance. “It felt great to go out on the mat, go against those older guys and dominate,” he said, reflecting on his hard work this season and the pride he feels representing his school.

In addition to Drake’s impressive finish, Sair Lopez (126), Tyson Reyes (215), and Blake Elder (285) each earned third-place finishes in their respective weight classes. Lopez capped his freshman season with a 36-6 record, while Reyes concluded his junior year at 26-2. Elder, finishing his senior campaign at 52-5, secured a medical withdrawal triumph in his final match.

Head coach Tom McMath praised his team’s performance, stating, “They balled out.” He emphasized how proud he is of the program and the athletes’ dedication, especially in such a demanding tournament setting.

The achievements of the Jensen Beach Falcons are a testament to their hard work and commitment, leaving a lasting legacy despite the absence of their former star. As the wrestling season wraps up, all eyes will be on how these young athletes, particularly Drake, continue to develop in the coming years.

As the excitement from the state championships settles, wrestling fans and the community are eager to see what the future holds for the Jensen Beach team. With a strong foundation and emerging talent, the Falcons remain a force to be reckoned with in Florida wrestling.
