Marin Catholic Wildcats Fall to King’s Academy in NorCal Playoffs

BREAKING: The dream season for the Marin Catholic Wildcats ended abruptly on Tuesday night as they were eliminated by King’s Academy, falling 85-73 in the opening round of the NorCal Division-I boys basketball championships. This shocking defeat took place in Kentfield, California, leaving fans and players reeling.

The Wildcats, seeded No. 8, faced a formidable No. 9 King’s Academy team, showcasing a blend of skill and determination that overwhelmed Marin Catholic. Despite the loss, first-year head coach Kevin Vasquez urged his players to reflect positively on their season. “What an incredible season,” he said. “Don’t let one game take anything away from what we did. It was truly a magical season.”

Marin Catholic entered the playoffs with a strong record of 24-5, defying initial predictions that they would struggle for the MCAL title. After securing that championship, they advanced to the North Coast Section open division playoffs, where they won one of two games before reaching the NorCal D-I playoffs.

Senior captain Joe Hammond expressed confidence heading into the game, stating, “We were confident coming into this game. But they were a very, very skilled team.” King’s Academy, with a record of 24-4, displayed their prowess as the defending D-III NorCal champs, leading to a challenging matchup for the Wildcats.

In a thrilling first half, Marin Catholic held a slim lead at halftime, 40-37, driven by the hot shooting of Oliver Myers, who netted 11 of his team-high 16 points before the break. “I think we took them by surprise a little bit,” Hammond noted, highlighting the Wildcats’ unexpected early dominance.

However, the momentum shifted in the second half. Though Marin Catholic initially maintained a narrow lead, King’s Academy rallied, with standout player Adrian Barnett scoring a game-high 20 points and securing nine rebounds. His athleticism turned the tide, showcasing the depth of skill on the Knights’ roster.

The Wildcats briefly tied the game at 58-58 in the fourth quarter, but as missed shots piled up, King’s Academy capitalized on rebounds, converting them into fastbreak layups that sealed Marin Catholic’s fate.

“We lost to a very good team without a doubt,” Vasquez acknowledged. “But we were ahead at halftime and then we couldn’t get a stop or make a shot.”

Beyond Myers, only senior Micah Pierce reached double figures, contributing 10 points and leading with six rebounds. Other key scorers included Chase Williams with 9 points, Jack Herman with 8 points, and Bentley Morrow with 7 points. The emotional weight of the defeat was palpable in the locker room, with Vasquez noting, “There were a lot of sad kids in that locker room.”

As the Wildcats reflect on their season, which saw them exceed expectations, Vasquez remains optimistic about the future. “The experience we got this season is going to pay dividends for years to come.” With their banner season now closed, Marin Catholic’s players are left to cherish the memories and lessons learned this year.

Fans and supporters are encouraged to share their thoughts and memories of this remarkable season as the Wildcats look toward rebuilding for the future.
