Two Teens Charged in Armed Robbery and Car Theft in Newark

Two teenagers face serious charges following an alleged armed robbery and car theft incident that occurred in Newark, Delaware, on February 16, 2024. According to the Newark Police Department, the suspects, both aged 16, were involved in an attack that left the victim with minor injuries.

Officers were dispatched to the 900 block of Wharton Drive at approximately 17:00 local time after receiving a report of the robbery. The victim informed police that he had been threatened at gunpoint by an acquaintance and that acquaintance’s friend, who had been in his apartment earlier that day. After the victim asked them to leave, one of the suspects allegedly brandished a handgun and struck him multiple times. The victim declined medical treatment for his injuries.

Police allege that the suspects stole the victim’s belongings, including vehicle keys, before fleeing the scene in the victim’s car. The incident reportedly occurred around 16:15.

Identification and Arrest of the Suspects

Detectives quickly identified a 16-year-old male and a 16-year-old female as the individuals involved in the robbery. On February 18, authorities located the female suspect inside the stolen vehicle and took her into custody. She was subsequently arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and is currently being held at the New Castle County Juvenile Detention Center on $42,100 cash bail.

The male suspect was arrested two days later at Newark Police Headquarters when he arrived to speak with detectives. He was arraigned in New Castle County Family Court and released on $20,000 unsecured bail.

Charges and Legal Proceedings

Both juveniles are facing multiple charges, including first-degree robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, theft of a motor vehicle, second-degree conspiracy, and criminal mischief under $1,500.
