URGENT UPDATE: A growing number of runners are preparing to take on a staggering 62 miles on March 14, 2024, completing the first-ever Murphy’s 100k footrace across Humboldt County. The event, organized by Pete Ciotti, aims to unite the community while raising funds for businesses and residents affected by the devastating fires earlier this year.
Starting from the Trinidad Murphy’s, participants will traverse scenic routes including Scenic Drive, Clam Beach, and the Hammond Coast Trail, before looping back to the Sunny Brae location. This unique challenge, similar to last year’s cycling event, emphasizes endurance on foot, showcasing the beauty of the area while promoting local support.
Ciotti, an enthusiastic ultrarunner known for his community events, stated, “It’s a great way to get everyone moving and see all the cool spots around the area.” He is rallying support for local businesses, encouraging runners to donate through the Arcata Chamber of Commerce. Notably, Murphy’s will also contribute by inviting customers to round up their purchases in the week leading up to the race, with proceeds aiding fire victims.
Since announcing the race just yesterday, about 15 participants have signed up, with some planning a relay from store to store. “In these dark times, it’s good to have people doing positive things,” Ciotti emphasized, highlighting the communal spirit of the event.
The race not only promotes health and fitness but also fosters connections among local runners. Aid stations will be set up by Murphy’s employees at each location to support participants throughout the challenging course.
