A long-awaited live-action adaptation of the iconic franchise is finally set to hit theaters. “Masters of the Universe,” featuring the beloved character He-Man, is scheduled to open in cinemas on June 5, 2026. This week, Empire Magazine released a detailed feature on the film, shedding light on its unique approach and the creative vision behind it.
Director Travis Knight emphasized the film’s commitment to embracing the inherent silliness of the franchise, which originated from toys that were later adapted into cartoons. In his words, “There’s an inherent silliness to it, which we are acknowledging and embracing. I think it’s a virtue.” Knight aims to weave this tone throughout the script to resonate with contemporary audiences, even addressing the sometimes outlandish character names.
The casting of He-Man was crucial for the film’s success. Nicholas Galitzine takes on the dual role of Adam and He-Man, a challenge Knight considered carefully. “I wasn’t looking for a body. I was looking for a soul,” he stated. Galitzine embodies the contrast between Adam’s empathetic nature and He-Man’s strength. Despite the daunting task of transforming his physique for the role, Galitzine found the experience transformative. “I think anyone seeing that iconic physique would find it extremely daunting,” he remarked, acknowledging the legendary proportions of the animated character.
Galitzine prepared extensively for the role, saying, “I had four or five months to get in shape. Truly, it was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done.” Nevertheless, he expressed enjoyment in wearing the costume, describing it as empowering: “You just become kind of abnormally confident in it.”
The film also features Jared Leto as the villain Skeletor, who remains true to his cartoon roots, sporting a purple hood and blue muscle suit. Knight praised Leto’s approach to the character, noting, “Skeletor was a really interesting villain. He looked cool. He was scary. He was funny. He was insecure.” Leto’s enthusiasm for the role, stemming from a long-standing connection with the character, allowed him to craft a unique interpretation. Knight further described Skeletor as embodying toxic masculinity.
Actor Idris Elba, who portrays Duncan/Man-at-Arms, shared his childhood connection to the franchise, stating, “He-Man was a really big part of my childhood.” Elba recalled his fondness for the original toys, which inspired his involvement in the film. He noted that Knight aimed to honor the aesthetic of the original series, adding, “I was all for that.”
The cast also includes notable talents such as Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Morena Baccarin as the Sorceress, and others including James Purefoy, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Charlotte Riley, Kojo Attah, and Kristen Wiig.
“Masters of the Universe” seeks to balance humor and adventure while remaining true to its roots. Fans can look forward to this fresh take on a cherished classic when it opens in theaters on June 5, 2026.
