Benjamin Burton Slayton, affectionately known as “Benny,” passed away on February 4, 2026, at the age of 86 in his home in Cullman County, Alabama. His life journey began on February 13, 1939, in Tulane, California, where he was born into a close-knit community that would shape his values and character.
Benny served in the United States Army, stationed in Germany, where he cultivated a sense of duty and camaraderie that remained with him throughout his life. Upon returning to civilian life, he married his beloved wife, Patsy Slayton, and together they built a family that brought him immense joy.
The majority of Benny’s professional life unfolded in Hanford, California, where he dedicated many years to Pirelli Tire Company. After retiring, he and Patsy relocated to Cullman County, Alabama, in 2008, embracing a new chapter filled with passion for outdoor activities, particularly hunting and fishing. Benny was also a devoted fan of Alabama football, often seen cheering for his team with enthusiasm.
Benny’s love for cooking was well-known among family and friends, particularly his talent for making banana bread, a treat that many cherished. He actively participated in his community as a member of the DAV Chapter 101 in Cullman, reflecting his commitment to supporting fellow veterans.
He leaves behind a rich legacy, survived by his daughters, Gayla Chapman (Glen Chapman) of Grover Beach, California, and Tammy Franks (Neville Franks) of Cullman County, Alabama. Benny is also remembered by his siblings: Mary Henderson (Doug Henderson), Bobby Lee Slayton, Gerald Slayton (Beverly Slayton), and Lucky Slayton (Pat Slayton). His family includes grandchildren Blake Slayton, Blaine Slayton, Sarah Renner, Rebecca Killahuss, Jessica Chapman, Hannah Chapman, Deanna Chapman, Shoelynn Chapman, Trista Franks, Keighley Bryant, and Liberty Franks, along with ten great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Benny was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy Slayton, and his son, Jimmy Slayton, as well as his sisters, Jeanette Long and Johnny Roe Lallement.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at noon at the VFW building located at 112 Veterans Drive, SW, Cullman, AL 35055. Family and friends are invited to gather and honor the remarkable life of Benjamin “Benny” Slayton, a devoted family man and a respected member of his community.
