Residents of Medina County, Ohio, seeking to obtain a passport can now access streamlined services at the Medina County District Library (MCDL). The library not only offers passport photo services but also assists with the processing of applications. According to Tina Sabol, community engagement manager for MCDL, local libraries in Medina, Brunswick, and Lodi are the only facilities providing these essential services.
Appointments are mandatory, with the last slot available two hours before closing. When a resident calls to schedule an appointment, a pre-interview is conducted to ensure that all necessary documentation is in order. This process is particularly beneficial for families dealing with unique situations, such as custody arrangements or the absence of a parent during a minor’s application. Sabol emphasized, “We want to make sure we understand your special circumstances and patrons have all the paperwork they need to successfully apply.”
For a typical family of four without complications, the entire process usually takes around one hour. Applicants should be mindful of specific requirements for passport photos, including avoiding glasses, hats, and certain shirt colors like white or camouflage. “We always recommend people go to mcdl.info/Passport before they come in to see exactly what they need,” Sabol stated. The website allows users to download forms, view costs related to the application and mailing, and understand expedite charges.
The MCDL has seen a steady demand for its passport services. In 2025, the library issued 3,958 passports, marking a 1 percent increase from the previous year. Sabol noted that the early months of the year tend to be the busiest as families prepare for summer travel. For example, the Medina Library processed 255 applications in January, followed by 191 in February, 228 in March, and 176 in April. As the year progresses, the numbers naturally decline, with 113 processed in October and 107 in November.
The library’s ability to assist with passport services not only simplifies the application process for residents but also reflects its commitment to supporting the community’s needs. As travel becomes increasingly popular, the MCDL stands ready to help residents navigate the requirements for obtaining a passport.
