The Bronx Opera will present a production of Mozart’s acclaimed opera “Idomeneo” on February 12, 14, and 15, 2024. The performances will take place at Lehman College’s Lovinger Theater and will be delivered in English, making this classic work accessible to a broader audience.

James Danner will take on the title role, leading a cast that includes Matthew Youngblood as Arbace, Rashard Deleston as Neptune, Samantha Long as Elettra, Emma Robertson as Ilia, and Miastasha Gonzalez-Colon as Idamante. The production will be conducted by Michael C. Haigler, under the direction of Benjamin Spierman.

This production holds particular significance as it marks the first full staging by the Bronx Opera since Michael Spierman, the company’s founder, transitioned to the role of Artistic Director Emeritus. He continues to serve as Music Director of The Orchestra of The Bronx, ensuring a smooth transition in leadership as the company moves forward.

“Idomeneo,” composed in the 18th century, tells the story of a Greek king who must navigate complex themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and divine intervention. The Bronx Opera’s choice to present this opera reflects its commitment to bringing high-quality performances to the community while also honoring the rich tradition of operatic storytelling.

The performances at Lehman College are part of the Bronx Opera’s ongoing initiative to engage local audiences with accessible productions of classic works. With a talented cast and creative team, this rendition of “Idomeneo” promises to be a compelling experience for both opera enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

Tickets for the performances are available through the Bronx Opera’s official website and are expected to sell quickly, given the production’s anticipated popularity. As the company prepares for this exciting event, it continues to exemplify its mission to promote opera as an art form that resonates with diverse audiences across the Bronx and beyond.
