Surgeon Pleads Not Guilty in Ohio Double Murder Case

UPDATE: A surgeon accused of the shocking murders of his ex-wife and her dentist husband in Columbus, Ohio, has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including premeditated aggravated murder. Michael McKee, 40, appeared via video link during his arraignment on January 10, 2023, following his extradition from Illinois.

Authorities allege that McKee fatally shot Spencer Tepe, 37, and Monique Tepe, 39, in their home located in the Weinland Park neighborhood between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. on December 30, 2022. The couple was found dead during a wellness check conducted by a friend, who called 911, stating, “There’s a body… he appears dead. He’s lying next to his bed, off of his bed in this blood.”

Following the tragic event, McKee was arrested on January 10 in Rockford, Illinois, where he had been staying. He was subsequently transferred to the James A. Karnes Corrections Center in Columbus, where he is currently being held on upgraded charges related to the slayings.

McKee is represented by attorney Diane Menashe, who has extensive legal experience, including high-profile cases like that of Dr. William Husel, who was acquitted of murder charges. Menashe argues that the evidence against McKee, which includes a vehicle linked to him arriving at the crime scene shortly before the murders, does not provide definitive proof of guilt.

Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant confirmed that several weapons were seized from McKee’s property, with preliminary links suggesting that at least one firearm may have been used in the killings. Reports indicate that McKee faces four counts of aggravated murder, alongside aggravated burglary charges. The specifics of the charges include allegations of using an automatic firearm or a silencer during the incidents.

The couple’s children were reportedly safe at the home during the shooting, raising concerns about their wellbeing. Family members revealed that the couple was preparing to celebrate their five-year wedding anniversary, adding a heartbreaking context to the ongoing investigation.

As the case develops, McKee’s next court appearance is anticipated, where further details are expected to emerge regarding the evidence and charges. The community remains on edge as the investigation unfolds, with many calling for justice for Spencer and Monique Tepe.
