A Grand Forks business owner is advocating for the Ready4Work Program, an initiative designed to help individuals break down barriers to employment. Launched in December 2023 by the local nonprofit organization, Love In Action, the program aims to support those seeking a chance to reintegrate into the workforce.
Preston Dahl, owner of Dahl House Properties, connected with the program through his personal relationship with Doris Lebby, president of Love In Action, and is motivated by his faith. He believes that the program is more than just a job assistance initiative; it serves a vital purpose within the community. “In some ways, it’s a ministry,” Dahl stated. He emphasized the importance of providing individuals with the belief that they can succeed, noting that many require a second chance to thrive.
Dahl frequently encounters a shortage of skilled labor in his business, particularly when hiring subcontractors for housing renovations. He identified that some individuals may have the skills needed but lack the confidence to pursue job opportunities due to past struggles. “They may feel defined by their past and assume no one will give them an opportunity,” he explained, adding that some people require assistance in developing soft skills for the workplace.
The Ready4Work Program seeks to address these challenges directly. Everett C. Jones Sr., executive director of Love In Action, highlighted the complexities involved in securing employment. Many potential job seekers face obstacles such as unreliable transportation, absence of a mailing address, or lack of essential documents like a birth certificate and Social Security card. “These are often the things that get in the way,” Jones noted. The organization aims to provide solutions, recognizing that while the barriers to employment are well-known, effective strategies to overcome them are essential.
To facilitate this process, the program includes staff supervisors who will assist participants in staying focused and ensuring they have reliable transportation to work. Jones described these logistical supports as “low hanging fruit,” yet vital for those looking to enter the workforce again.
In addition to aiding job seekers, the Ready4Work Program also aims to alleviate concerns for employers by covering certain costs, such as insurance, so that businesses only need to focus on wages. Jones affirmed that the program is designed not just for the homeless community but for anyone experiencing a shortfall and seeking to return to work.
“Our doors will be open to accept applications and get them assigned,” Jones confirmed. Business owners in Grand Forks with immediate, seasonal, or ongoing labor needs are encouraged to participate in the program. Interested employers can contact Jones directly at [email protected] or by calling (701) 330-8775.
Supporters of the initiative can also contribute to its success by helping to fund program coordination, insurance, compliance, supervision, and sustainability efforts. “We are grateful for the donors that we have, and we are excited for anyone who wants to be a part of this specific transition with us as we go forward, filling in these gaps,” Jones concluded.
The Ready4Work Program represents a collaborative effort to build a more inclusive workforce in Grand Forks, reflecting a commitment to support individuals in overcoming obstacles and achieving their employment goals.
