The newly launched series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, aims to draw in new audiences with a contemporary approach, according to veteran actor Robert Picardo. In a recent interview, Picardo emphasized that the show could be an ideal entry point for those unfamiliar with the long-standing Star Trek franchise, despite receiving mixed reviews from fans and critics alike.
In his discussion with MovieWeb, the 72-year-old actor pointed out significant changes in the series’ dialogue. By moving away from the “mid-galactic speech” typical of earlier iterations, the creators hope to make the series more relatable to younger viewers. Picardo remarked, “It will make the show much more accessible to first-time audiences.” He highlighted that the narrative focuses on characters who are at a pivotal stage in their lives, making it easier for younger viewers to connect.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, which premiered on January 15, 2026, is set in the 32nd century. The series follows a group of Starfleet cadets who navigate their personal and academic challenges as they aspire to become seasoned officers. Picardo noted that the story addresses relatable themes: “They’re still going through all the interpersonal issues, the self-doubts, the ‘Who am I really and … what do I want?’”
This coming-of-age narrative not only appeals to younger audiences but also contains elements that longtime fans will appreciate. Picardo stated, “So, you don’t need to be a ‘Star Trek’ fan to start the show. And yet, it has a lot of blessings for older fans, too.” This broad appeal positions the series as a family-friendly viewing option, suitable for multiple generations to enjoy together.
Despite the optimistic outlook from Picardo, Starfleet Academy has received a mixed reception overall. On Rotten Tomatoes, the show boasts a favorable Tomatometer rating of 87 percent from critics, who have generally praised its fresh approach. However, fan reactions have been less enthusiastic, reflected in a Popcornmeter score of only 43 percent. This disparity highlights the challenges the series faces in appealing to both new viewers and longtime fans.
As Starfleet Academy continues to unfold, its ability to bridge the gap between generations of viewers will be closely watched. The series aims to solidify its place within the expansive Star Trek universe while attracting a new audience eager to explore the final frontier.
