UPDATE: North Texas is bracing for a significant winter storm starting this weekend, with local businesses urging residents to prepare immediately for potential power outages. The storm, expected to hit on March 10, 2023, could lead to dangerous ice accumulation and widespread freezing temperatures.
Business has surged at Dallas-based Salas Services as residents heed warnings about the approaching storm. Owner Joseph Salas reported, “The word is getting out that the weather will be bad this weekend.” Last-minute preparations are underway as tree limbs are being cleared to prevent hazardous falls on homes, vehicles, or power lines. Salas warned, “We lose limbs that fall on power lines, then the whole neighborhood loses power. We don’t want that.”
Local utility provider Oncor is actively monitoring forecasts, preparing for potentially severe conditions. Experts note that just half an inch of ice can add 500 pounds of weight to power lines, raising the risk of outages that have plagued the region in previous years.
A vital tip from Nick Chaset, CEO of Octopus Energy US, emphasizes the importance of gradually adjusting home heating. “I’m going to actually set the heater in my home at noon, so I don’t have to crank it up as high at 5 p.m.,” Chaset explained. This strategy not only eases the heating demand but also supports grid stability during peak times.
Chaset expressed confidence in the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), noting improvements in the power system’s resilience against winter weather. “The system has improved so much over the last few years that it is in a better condition to deal with these extreme events,” he stated. However, he still urged residents to plan ahead to mitigate risks.
As preparations ramp up, Salas Services has been advising clients all winter about the impending storm. Salas confirmed, “Get ahead of it. Don’t wait until it’s too late.” His team will be on standby for emergency calls during the storm, anticipating that once the ice melts, saturated ground conditions may lead to uprooted trees and further challenges for homeowners.
As North Texas faces this winter storm, residents are reminded that taking proactive measures now could significantly reduce the impact of potential power outages and hazardous conditions. Stay tuned for updates as the situation develops, and prioritize safety measures to navigate this severe weather event.
