This shift comes after 17 House Republicans voted to extend expired Obamacare insurance subsidies, a move AFP described as a “gut punch” to its grassroots efforts.
According to a report by Politico, this decision underscores the growing tensions within the party as it approaches the upcoming midterm elections. The vote took place on July 13, 2023, when the House passed legislation aimed at reviving the subsidies for three years. Although the bill is anticipated to face challenges in the Senate, there are ongoing bipartisan discussions that may lead to a framework for keeping the subsidies in place.
AFP’s spokesperson expressed disappointment, stating, “This was a gut punch to every grassroots activist who gave up their nights and weekends to support each of these lawmakers.” The organization emphasized that trust needs to be rebuilt before it can consider further investment in these districts.
In light of this decision, AFP is halting all current and future grassroots activities in the districts represented by the 17 Republicans who broke ranks. This includes suspending advertising and voter outreach that had previously supported the GOP’s domestic policy initiatives, particularly the package known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.”
Former President Donald Trump has also weighed in on the issue, criticizing insurance companies for profiting from the subsidies. He suggested the possibility of direct payments to consumers, a strategy that AFP endorses. In a statement following the House vote, AFP reiterated Trump’s stance, declaring, “President Trump has been clear: doubling down on Obamacare is the wrong direction. He’s right — and Republicans should listen.”
As the Republican Party grapples with internal divisions, the implications of this decision by AFP could significantly impact the party’s strategy and unity leading up to the midterm elections.
