Fetty Wap expressed deep gratitude towards 50 Cent for his unwavering support throughout his recent prison term, which lasted over three years. In his first interview following his release from a Minnesota prison on January 8, 2024, the rapper credited 50 Cent as a significant source of financial and emotional assistance during his legal troubles.
During an appearance on The Breakfast Club, Fetty Wap shared his appreciation, stating, “From day one, it was like, ‘Whatever you need, just holler at me.’” He recounted how 50 Cent not only offered guidance but also asked him, “Where is this money going?” This proactive approach was a departure from what Fetty had previously experienced, highlighting 50 Cent’s commitment to supporting his friend.
Fetty, whose real name is Willie Maxwell II, noted that 50 Cent was there throughout his incarceration, providing motivation and advice. “Whatever I needed, he was right there,” Fetty said. He recalled conversations in which 50 urged him to focus on his music career and avoid making poor choices. “You should’ve kept going hard,” Fetty imitated, adopting a Queens accent while recalling 50’s encouragement.
50 Cent wasted no time in celebrating Fetty’s return to the music scene. He shared a clip from the interview on his Instagram, welcoming Fetty home with the caption, “WOP HOME fresh out the FED’S ready to work. He good I got him let’s get it.” The support from 50 Cent appears to have played a crucial role in Fetty’s journey through a challenging period.
In addition to 50 Cent’s mentorship, Fetty acknowledged other artists, including Coi Leray, Chief Keef, and Albee Al, who contributed in various ways while he was incarcerated. Their encouragement helped him remain positive and focused on his future.
Fetty Wap was arrested in September 2021, just before a scheduled performance at Rolling Loud NYC, due to federal drug charges. Prosecutors alleged he was involved in transporting over 100 kilograms of drugs from California to Long Island. He later pleaded guilty in August 2022 to a charge related to distributing at least 500 grams of cocaine. Ultimately, he was sentenced to six years in prison in May 2023.
After serving more than three years, Fetty Wap’s early release came about 11 months ahead of his expected release date. Reflecting on his time in prison, he expressed gratitude towards his family, friends, and fans in a statement to Billboard, saying, “Your love, prayers, and continued support truly mean everything to me.”
Looking ahead, Fetty is committed to making a positive impact through community initiatives. He aims to support at-risk children by enhancing access to education, technology skills, and vision care. “I’m committed to moving forward with purpose and making a meaningful impact where it matters most,” he stated.
