Urban Growers Collective Turns Christmas Trees into Goat Feasts

As the holiday season concludes, the Urban Growers Collective in Chicago has initiated its annual tradition of recycling discarded Christmas trees by feeding them to goats. Located in the South Side, this community-focused urban farm welcomes donations of trees free from ornaments and tinsel, allowing the goats to enjoy a festive feast.

According to Keani Staton, the community and volunteer coordinator at Urban Growers Collective, the Nigerian Pygmy goats are always eager for their special treat. “These girls have the hugest appetite you will ever see. They never stop being hungry,” Staton remarked. After the holiday festivities, the goats’ regular diet of hay transforms into a seasonal delight as they feast on the donated pine trees.

This tradition has been ongoing for three years, with the farm encouraging community members to drop off their used Christmas trees. “When things are really hard and able to give them some more texture, that’s when they’re attacking the tree,” Staton explained. The goats relish the opportunity to consume the trees, often finishing one in about ten minutes.

Urban Growers Collective takes care to ensure that only trees lacking any harmful decorations are accepted. Any remnants left after the goats have enjoyed their meal are repurposed for composting and wood chipping, contributing to sustainable practices on the farm. “So, it’s a win-win all around for everybody,” Staton added.

The festive spirit remains alive even after the holidays, as the farm invites the public to participate in the tree recycling process this weekend and again on January 10, 2024. Visitors dropping off trees can also enjoy the chance to meet the hungry goats, enhancing community engagement.

This initiative not only provides a unique way to recycle Christmas trees but also emphasizes the importance of community involvement in supporting local agriculture. As the goats feast on the trees, they symbolize a joyful conclusion to the holiday season while fostering sustainable practices in urban environments.
