Senator Tuberville Recognizes Colonel Patrick Downing as Veteran of the Month

U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) has honored Colonel Patrick Downing as the January “Veteran of the Month” in a video release highlighting Downing’s distinguished military career and contributions to his community. This recognition is part of an initiative to acknowledge the sacrifices and achievements of veterans from Alabama.

Colonel Downing’s Military Journey

Colonel Downing, a native of Mobile, Alabama, dedicated 36 years to military service, beginning his journey at the age of 17 when he enlisted in the U.S. Army. His career was marked by his enlistment in the Special Forces in 1961, where he served for three decades, including two tours in Vietnam. He recalls how, upon his arrival in Vietnam, his unit was met with a mortar attack and faced threats due to a bounty placed on them. Despite these dangers, Downing remained steadfast in his mission.

Before his deployment, Downing married his high school sweetheart, Patricia, in a chapel at Fort Bragg. Their commitment to each other remained strong throughout his military service, which included numerous relocations and challenges.

Community Contributions and Family Life

After retiring from the Army in 1996, Downing and his wife decided to return to Alabama, settling in Mobile after 19 moves across the country. He utilized his passion for education to contribute to his hometown by working at the University of South Alabama for over 20 years. During this time, he directed one of the university’s satellite campuses for 15 years and eventually managed transportation services for both the main and Springhill campuses until his retirement in 2015.

Colonel Downing and Patricia take pride in their family, which includes seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Senator Tuberville expressed his appreciation for Downing’s decision to plant roots in Mobile after a lifetime serving the nation. “After traveling far and wide to protect our freedoms, I am glad Pat planted his roots down in Mobile,” Tuberville remarked.

As part of the ongoing initiative to honor veterans, constituents can nominate other Alabama veterans for recognition by submitting their information to Senator Tuberville’s office. Nominations for the 2026 “Veteran of the Month” series can be sent via email to [email protected].

Colonel Patrick Downing’s story serves as an inspiring reminder of the enduring contributions of veterans to both their country and their communities. His commitment to service and education exemplifies the values that many strive to uphold.
