Thousands Honor Fallen Delaware Trooper Cpl. Matthew Snook Today

URGENT UPDATE: Thousands gather today to pay final respects to fallen Delaware State Police Corporal Matthew “Ty” Snook at the University of Delaware. The public viewing starts at 9 a.m. and runs until noon at the Bob Carpenter Center, followed by a Celebration of Life ceremony from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Law enforcement and first responders convened at Christiana Mall early this morning to participate in a solemn procession to the university. Southbound lanes on I-95 were temporarily closed at 6:30 a.m. to facilitate the procession as thousands make their way to honor the courageous officer.

Cpl. Snook was tragically killed while responding to a shooting at a DMV in Minquadale, Delaware, just two days before Christmas. Eyewitness accounts reveal that after being shot, Snook heroically pushed a DMV employee to safety, urging others to run as the assailant shot him again. This act of bravery has underscored the profound sacrifice made by Snook, a dedicated member of the Delaware State Police for over 10 years.

The emotional impact of this loss resonates deeply within the community as Snook leaves behind a wife and a one-year-old daughter. The outpouring of support is evident with anticipated traffic challenges today, as over 3,000 additional cars are expected near the university. In response, all 13,000 students of the Christina School District will engage in virtual learning to alleviate congestion around the bus depot.

Following the ceremony, attendees will witness a 21-gun salute and a flyover in honor of Cpl. Snook’s service. The procession will then proceed to a private location for his burial.

As the community comes together to remember a hero, Cpl. Snook’s valor and dedication to protecting others will not be forgotten. Officials encourage attendees to arrive early to pay their respects safely. This event marks a crucial moment of solidarity and reflection for all those who serve and protect.
