Search Underway for Two Missing Off Withernsea Coast

A search operation is currently in progress for two individuals believed to be missing off the coast of Withernsea in the East Riding of Yorkshire, according to the HM Coastguard. Emergency services received the call shortly after 15:00 on January 1, 2024, and have mobilized ambulances, helicopters, and a fixed-wing aircraft to assist in the rescue efforts amidst “horrendous conditions.” Reports indicate that wave heights reached as much as 9.8 feet during the day.

As part of the ongoing operation, Humberside Police confirmed the recovery of an unconscious man from the water. Despite the immediate response from emergency personnel, the 67-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have stated that the circumstances surrounding his death are not considered suspicious. Police have noted that searches will continue, and residents can expect an increased presence of law enforcement in the area.

Challenging Weather Conditions

Local photographer Darrin Stevens, who resides just 250 meters from the coastline, described the weather as bitter and freezing. “I came back into my office and I could see emergency services 30 feet away from the sea. The helicopter was so close to the house it was incredible,” he said. Stevens highlighted the dangers posed by the frigid water, warning that those submerged do not have long to survive in such harsh conditions.

“The sea could have been very dangerous, and when the water is as bitter as it is, every care needs to be taken. You need to be at your wisest,” he added, reflecting the urgency of the situation.

In light of these events, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has issued safety advice emphasizing the risks associated with cold water shock, particularly in conditions where the water temperature is 15°C or below. The RNLI cautioned that the average sea temperature around the UK and Ireland currently ranges from 6°C to 10°C, significantly increasing the danger for anyone entering the water.

Cold Water Risks and Recent Incidents

Gareth Morrison, head of water safety for the RNLI, urged swimmers to be aware of the dangers associated with winter swimming. “We know this time of year many people take part in festive and New Year dips, or continue to take part in regular winter swims. We are urging anyone entering the water to check sea conditions carefully and to understand their own limitations,” he said.

Morrison also pointed out that with sea temperatures continuing to drop, individuals should take personal health issues into account before venturing into cold water. The tragic incident off Withernsea follows another occurrence on New Year’s Day, where a 51-year-old man died while swimming at Brighton. Sussex police responded to the emergency call at 10:35 on January 1, after the swimmer from Kettering, Northamptonshire, was recovered from the water near Brighton Palace Pier.

The search mission off Withernsea remains active, with hopes of locating the missing individuals. Emergency services are committed to ensuring the safety of all involved and providing assistance to the community during this difficult time.
