Remembering Sally Ann Sprout Mallard: A Life of Love and Community

Sally Ann Sprout Mallard, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2025, surrounded by her family. She was 89 years old and is remembered for her vibrant spirit, exceptional hospitality, and commitment to her loved ones. Sally spent her final moments with her husband of 69 years, Clayton Mallard, and their daughters, Jennifer and Gwendolyn.

Born on September 8, 1936, to Melba Pauline Savage Sprout and Ralph Edgar Sprout, Sally grew up in Torrance, California. She attended local schools where she met Clayton during the 10th grade at Torrance High School. After studying for two years at Whittier College, she married Clayton on August 5, 1956, beginning a partnership that would last nearly seven decades.

Sally’s life was characterized by her dedication to family and community. The couple moved frequently due to Clayton’s career, living in Atlanta, Georgia, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and returning to Tustin, California before retiring to Fallbrook, California, in 2002. Throughout their journey, they cultivated lasting friendships and maintained connections with old friends.

In Fallbrook, Sally became known for her exceptional entertaining skills. She was an avid cook and enjoyed hosting gatherings, ensuring that every guest felt welcomed. Whether it was a holiday dinner or a family celebration, Sally’s thoughtfulness shone through. She took pride in her ability to bring people together and create memorable moments.

Sally was also an active member of her church, embodying the values she preached. Her kindness extended beyond family, as she touched the lives of those around her. A passionate bridge player, she taught the game in Iowa and continued to participate in bridge groups throughout her life, including at the Fallbrook Senior Center.

Sports were another passion for Sally, who learned to play tennis in her thirties and actively participated in the Fallbrook Tennis Club after retirement. Her zest for life was evident in her many friendships, including a close bond with Dorothy Roth, the club’s owner.

A highlight of Sally’s life was her family, particularly the milestones they celebrated together. The births of her four daughters, their weddings, and the arrival of grandchildren and great-grandchildren filled her with joy. Among her cherished memories is the celebration of her 50th wedding anniversary, where she gathered family and friends to honor their enduring love. A special guest at that celebration was Leonora Costales-Cabesa, an Ecuadorian AFS student who lived with the Mallard family from 1976 to 1977 and maintained a close relationship with them.

Sally is survived by Clayton, her three sisters, Peggy Olivier, Jeannie Beard, and Linda Redderson, along with their daughters, Rebecca Mallard, Gwendolyn Wilson, Jennifer Artunian, and Cynthia Swift. She leaves behind a legacy of love through her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including Spencer, Anastasia, Taylor, Dylan, Amanda, Farren, Nicolette, and Rachel, as well as great-grandchildren Londyn, Pharaoh, and Treasure.

A memorial service will be held for family and friends on January 3, 2026, at 11 AM at Christ the King Church in Fallbrook. Sally Ann Sprout Mallard’s legacy of love, community, and kindness will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
