UPDATE: The Aptos High boys basketball team faced a tough defeat against Half Moon Bay, falling 55-37 in the third-place game of the 12th Annual Aptos High/Santa Cruz Warriors NorCal Invitational at KP Arena on January 10, 2024. Senior Gio Garduno-Martin led his team with 16 points, but the Mariners struggled to keep pace after a rocky start.
Trailing 15-2 after the first quarter and 28-11 at halftime, Aptos attempted a comeback, narrowing the gap to 10 points early in the fourth quarter. Coach Joseph Smith expressed pride in his team’s effort, stating, “I was proud of how we competed today against a tough opponent. I thought we improved as a team over the course of the tournament.”
Half Moon Bay, improving to 5-5 overall, was bolstered by junior Levi Meighan, who contributed 10 points. Meanwhile, for Aptos (4-8), Levi Race added 15 points and Jack Tovani chipped in 6 points. The Mariners now look ahead to their next game against Watsonville on January 12 at 7 p.m.
The championship was claimed by Willow Glen, defeating Pioneer 63-58, while St. Mary’s of Stockton edged out Los Gatos 76-73 in the consolation championship. Brayden Gumabo of Willow Glen was named tournament MVP, with top honors also going to Garduno-Martin and Race, who were selected for the all-tournament team.
