Tragic Incident Claims Life of Five-Year-Old at Japanese Ski Resort

A five-year-old boy tragically lost his life after becoming trapped in a ski travelator at the Asarigawa Onsen Ski Resort in Otaru, Japan. The incident occurred on December 28, 2023, while the young boy, identified as Hinata Goto, was vacationing with his family. Reports indicate that he fell while preparing to disembark from the travelator, leading to his right arm becoming caught in the machine’s mechanism.

Emergency responders were alerted, and it took rescue teams approximately 40 minutes to disassemble parts of the travelator to free the unconscious child. Following their efforts, he was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Investigation Underway

Authorities have initiated an investigation to assess whether any negligence occurred in the installation or maintenance of the travelator. Local media reports suggest that the safety mechanism was operational at the time of the incident. Staff at the resort indicated that the travelator had functioned properly earlier that day.

The travelator, often referred to as a “magic carpet” lift, is approximately 30 meters (98 feet) long and 60 centimeters (24 inches) wide. Installed around six years ago, it serves to transport skiers from the resort parking lot to the slopes. These lifts are typically found on beginner slopes and are designed for ease of access to skiing facilities.

Witnesses have raised concerns about the safety of this particular travelator, noting that other visitors have experienced similar tripping incidents. A regular visitor expressed unease, stating, “Even as an adult, there are times when I think, ‘It’s a little scary.'”

Resort Response and Future Safety Measures

In the wake of this tragic event, officials at the Asarigawa Onsen Ski Resort have expressed deep remorse. A spokesperson for the resort indicated that they are committed to implementing measures to enhance safety and prevent such incidents in the future.

Hokkaido, known as Japan’s ski capital, attracts millions of tourists each year, particularly during the winter months when skiing becomes a popular activity. The region is renowned for its picturesque landscapes and excellent skiing opportunities, making this incident particularly heartbreaking for the local community and visitors alike.

As the investigation continues, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of all guests at ski resorts across the region, as authorities and resort management work together to address any potential risks associated with ski travelators.
