Kids Craft Unique Pickle Ornaments at Livingston Parish Workshop

On December 20, 2023, children in Central, Louisiana, engaged in a creative workshop at the Arts Council of Livingston Parish, where they crafted unique pickle ornaments for their Christmas trees. This activity introduced participants to a quirky tradition rooted in German American culture, which many may not recognize.

The workshop, organized by Mary Felder, a board member of the Arts Council, aimed to share this lesser-known festive custom. Felder explained, “I was told the story of the Christmas pickle and I went from there.” The event drew families visiting the Denham Springs Christmas Village, eager to learn more about this intriguing holiday ornament.

The origins of the Christmas pickle ornament are somewhat ambiguous. Some legends trace it back to Germany, although its authenticity has been questioned. According to tradition, once the pickle ornament is hidden among other decorations on the tree, the first person to find it on Christmas morning receives an extra present from Santa or, alternatively, a year of good fortune.

Luke Hopkins, a six-year-old participant, expressed his enthusiasm about the activity. He meticulously painted his ornament, choosing red and blue for the pickle’s eyes, reflecting his favorite colors. His cousin, Laila Altazan, joined in the fun, creating her own ornament as well. “The story is fascinating,” Altazan noted.

Unlike typical glass ornaments available in stores, these creations were handmade and hand-painted, providing a personal touch to holiday decorations. The workshop was free of charge, with the Arts Council supplying all necessary materials and volunteers assisting the children throughout the process.

“I wanted to do something that would show the community what we are doing,” Felder said, highlighting the event’s community spirit. The enthusiastic atmosphere was palpable, as young participants eagerly anticipated the chance to locate the hidden pickle ornament on Christmas Day.

One particularly confident child, Luke, declared, “I will be the first one to find (the pickle ornament), yes sir, and get the extra present.”

Berrien Springs, Michigan, often claims the title of the Christmas pickle capital of the world, hosting an annual pickle festival complete with a parade. While the origins of the tradition may be debated, the joy it brings to families during the festive season remains undeniable.

With the workshop’s success, the Arts Council of Livingston Parish continues to foster community engagement through creative initiatives, allowing children to enjoy memorable experiences that extend beyond mere decoration. As participants like Luke left with their handmade ornaments, they carried home not only a piece of art but also a delightful story to share.
