Chicago Launches Urgent Christmas Tree and Holiday Light Recycling

URGENT UPDATE: The city of Chicago kicks off its annual Christmas tree recycling program from January 3-17, 2024, at 27 parks across the city. Residents are encouraged to recycle their trees instead of leaving them in alleys, as the program transforms used trees into mulch.

The Department of Streets and Sanitation and the Chicago Park District collaborate each year to ensure sustainable disposal of holiday trees. Only natural trees are accepted—garlands, wreaths, and any decorations must be removed.

Drop-off locations include:

– Bessemer Park, 8930 S. Muskegon Ave.
– Clark Park, 3400 N. Rockwell St.
– Grant Park, 900 S. Columbus Drive
– Lincoln Park, Cannon Drive at Fullerton Ave.
– Warren Park, 6601 N. Western Ave.

From January 5, residents can also collect free mulch at select drop-off sites on a first-come, first-served basis. This initiative not only promotes recycling but also provides a valuable resource for gardening and landscaping.

Additionally, don’t forget about those broken holiday lights! Reduce Waste Chicago is expanding its light recycling program this year, thanks to a $5,000 grant. Last year, the program successfully collected 4,618 pounds of lights from 40 drop-off locations across 17 wards.

Residents can drop off their holiday lights at 42 locations, including:

– The Unwaste Shop, 1108 W. Madison St.
– Working Bikes, 2434 S. Western Ave.
– Trash Castle, 1048 W. 37th St.
– Habitat for Humanity ReStore Chicago, 6040 N. Pulaski Road.

With the holidays behind us, this is the perfect opportunity to responsibly dispose of your holiday waste while contributing to a greener Chicago.
