Texas Home Transforms with English Countryside Inspiration

A new residence near Houston showcases a stunning blend of Texan and English styles, thanks to designer Meg Lonergan and her client, Brook Novelli. Inspired by the charming aesthetics of the English countryside, the 8,000 square-foot home has been reimagined to create a warm, inviting space for Brook’s family, including her husband Mike Novelli and their adult children.

The Novellis were eager to transform their home after raising three daughters. Instead of downsizing, they sought to reinvent their property as a retreat suitable for their growing family. Brook, who has a rich background in interior design due to her mother’s influence, was deeply involved in the transformation process. She carefully selected Lonergan for the project due to her layered and soulful design approach.

Creating a Family-Centric Retreat

The house’s design process began with a clear vision focused on family needs. The first priority was to create a bunk room for Brook’s grandsons, utilizing space in the attic. Lonergan noted, “Brook knew exactly what she wanted, and her priority was family-driven.” This focus on family extended throughout the project, shaping the design choices and overall layout.

Architect Matthew Mitchell played a key role in refining the home’s structure. He helped define the expansive spaces with architectural details like columns. The kitchen received a significant update, featuring a new layout that encourages social gatherings. “We used wood stain rather than paint for the cabinetry to create contrast and balance,” Lonergan explained.

The interior design evolved, embracing what Brook describes as “scope-creep,” where ideas expanded beyond the original plan. Lonergan successfully advocated for updates in various spaces, including the library—a former playroom that Brook had initially overlooked. The transformation has turned it into one of her favorite areas in the home.

Blending Styles and Personal Touches

The design masterfully combines elements of English decor with Southern American style. Lonergan utilized a palette of earthy greens and browns, complemented by vibrant accents throughout the home. The dining room features hand-printed wallpaper from de Gournay, alongside a buffet and dining table that Brook has cherished for years.

“Using many of Brook’s existing pieces was important. It’s fun to build the interior puzzle,” Lonergan said. In total, over 20 pieces of furniture were re-covered, enhancing their appeal while maintaining a connection to the past.

The bathroom renovation stands out as a luxurious addition to the home. The new design includes modern amenities and a concealed shower room, elevating the space to a new level of sophistication.

The collaborative effort between Lonergan, Brook, and Mitchell has resulted in a home that not only honors its Texan roots but also elegantly embodies the essence of an English countryside retreat. Visitors might find that the atmosphere is perfect for an afternoon tea, blending both cultures seamlessly.

As the Novellis settle into their beautifully transformed home, they are pleased with the results, which reflect both their lifestyle and aesthetic preferences. The project demonstrates how thoughtful design can create spaces that resonate with personal history while accommodating family growth.
