URGENT UPDATE: A man was shot and killed by police in Queens early Sunday morning after allegedly charging at officers with a box cutter. The incident occurred at approximately 12:25 a.m. on December 21, inside an apartment building located at 1170 Nameoke St. in Far Rockaway.
According to NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera, officers from the 101st Precinct responded to a 911 call regarding a domestic dispute between a father and his son. Upon arrival, officers spoke with the father and mother and entered the apartment to locate the 29-year-old son, but he was not immediately found.
As officers were exiting the apartment, they spotted the son in the hallway, holding a box cutter. Chief Rivera confirmed that the officers issued multiple verbal commands for the man to drop the weapon, but he did not comply.
As the situation escalated, the father fled behind the officers, who were faced with the son charging at them with the weapon. One officer deployed a Taser, but a second officer quickly discharged their firearm, striking the man.
Emergency services were called, and officers performed CPR on the suspect until he was transported to Jamaica Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The two responding officers were evaluated at a local hospital and found to be unharmed. Chief Rivera emphasized the dangers police face daily, stating, “This incident once again demonstrates the dangers that our police officers face every day and how a routine call can quickly escalate into an extremely dangerous situation.”
The NYPD Force Investigation Division is currently investigating the incident.
As details continue to emerge, this story remains developing and will be updated as more information becomes available.
