Operation Holiday Aids Struggling Families This Christmas Season

UPDATE: As the holiday season approaches, families are rallying for support through the annual Operation Holiday, which is set to provide vital assistance to struggling families across Montgomery County. The program aims to ensure that children have gifts under the tree and families enjoy a festive meal, especially in challenging times.

Whitney, a 33-year-old single mother of four, exemplifies the urgent need for help this Christmas. Having just completed her last semester in criminal justice at Montgomery Community College, she is facing financial strain after taking a leave of absence from her job. “I’ve busted my butt to make sure that my children have what they need,” she explains, as the holidays draw near.

This year, Operation Holiday has partnered with 21 agencies across the tri-county area to assist 199 families with a total of 403 children in need. The program, now in its 35th year, has provided substantial support since its inception in 1991, helping families put food on the table and gifts under the tree during the holidays.

Last year, nearly $85,000 in donations facilitated gift cards for 366 children and grocery cards for 189 families. This year, with increasing needs, Whitney has received support from Orion Communities, a nonprofit in Phoenixville, that has provided gift cards for food and holiday presents. “The generosity of others is a beautiful thing,” she shares, expressing hope that she can pay it forward someday.

The program operates with zero overhead, ensuring that all funds collected remain within the local community. Funds are managed by volunteers from MediaNews Group, who audit the donations. Gift cards for groceries are sourced through partnerships, including Weis Markets, allowing families to purchase traditional holiday meals.

The urgency for donations is palpable as families like Whitney’s rely on community support. Donations can be made online through a secure portal in partnership with TriCounty Community Network or mailed directly to designated addresses in Pottstown and Reading. Contributions are tax-deductible, and donors can choose to remain anonymous or dedicate their gifts in honor of someone special.

As we move closer to Christmas, the demand for assistance continues to grow. The community’s response remains crucial for families in need, ensuring that the spirit of the season is felt by all.
