BREAKING NEWS: In a significant announcement, Oscar Smith High School’s senior wide receiver Travis Johnson has been honored as the VHSL state Class 6 Offensive Player of the Year. This recognition comes as the Tigers’ head coach Chris Scott also earns the title of Coach of the Year after leading the team to its second consecutive championship and the fourth during his tenure.
Johnson, who is committed to the University of Michigan, delivered an impressive season with 56 receptions for 1,157 yards and 15 touchdowns. His performance marks his second straight all-state recognition, showcasing his exceptional skills on the field.
The accolades didn’t stop with Johnson. The Tigers boasted a robust lineup, featuring seven other players selected for the first team. Among them are junior quarterback Lonnie Andrews, senior offensive lineman Dory Wilson, and senior linebacker Malachi White. The team’s excellence is further highlighted by senior defensive back Jayden Covil, senior punt returner Quali Price, and senior all-purpose player Na’Rod Jarvis.
The second team also recognized senior tight end Charles McGlown and Jarvis, who was acknowledged at linebacker. This extensive recognition underscores the Tigers’ dominance in Virginia high school football.
In related news, Old Dominion University is making headlines as well. Starting tight end Jailen Butler intends to enter the transfer portal, signaling a shift for the team. Butler, standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 245 pounds, has made 21 starts with 18 career receptions for 103 yards and one touchdown. He joins quarterback Colton Joseph and running back Trequan Jones in pursuing new opportunities through the portal.
Meanwhile, the Monarchs have gained a commitment from running back Hunter Patterson, who transfers from Division II West Liberty. Patterson showcased his talent with a remarkable 1,219 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns on 174 carries, along with 33 receptions for 418 yards and three touchdowns in the previous season.
Switching gears to women’s sports, Christopher Newport University has celebrated two players, senior midfielder Hanna Heaton and junior goalkeeper Amy Sidaway, for achieving Scholar All-Region honors. This recognition is significant as it extends a record streak to eight consecutive years for the program, emphasizing the dual success of its athletes both on the field and in academics. Heaton’s repeat selection to the first team highlights her consistent excellence, with both players maintaining a cumulative GPA of over 3.40.
