Gingerbread Architects Unveil Edible Masterpieces in Chico Contest

URGENT UPDATE: The inaugural Chico Community Gingerbread House Contest is underway, showcasing a delightful array of edible architecture at the Museum of Northern California Art. The competition features creations from local gingerbread architects of all ages, with entries ranging from children as young as six to experienced adults.

A total of seven entries are on display, each made up of at least 80% edible materials, according to museum Executive Director Pat Macias. These imaginative structures include iconic landmarks like the El Rey Theater, a nostalgic childhood home, a spooky haunted chapel, and a whimsical sugar wonderland.

The excitement peaks today as winners are set to be announced at the exhibit’s reception from 3 to 4 p.m.. A panel of judges will evaluate the entries and award prizes for best in category, best overall, and a coveted people’s choice award.

Macias revealed that event organizers, including Jodi Drysdale and Pam Young from the Downtown Chico Business Association, drew inspiration from the renowned National Gingerbread House Competition held in Asheville, North Carolina.

This contest not only highlights local talent but also fosters community spirit, bringing families together to celebrate creativity and craftsmanship. As attendees flock to the museum to vote for their favorites, the buzz around these edible masterpieces is palpable.
